You're right, it is similar. But a fully upgradet Volcano does (only) 36000 dmg if it holds 45 lavaballs (normal charge up). that is one third of the Orbital cannon. But you can release the lava at any time, the cannon cann't do that.

And btw: Orbital cannons are cool, it doesn't matter in which game thay appear. ;)
